20 May 2013 : No highfives at Highfield for Hambledon III
Having struggled to find eleven players all week, the 3rds arrived at Highfield with few expectations and the skipper hoping to pick up some valuable points.  The wicket looked like a 'road' and Highfield II won the toss and decided to bat.  With both the openers getting 50's (both being dropped by the skipper at long on) it was looking ominous.  Matt Radford took the long on position and a superb catch in the next over removed the no.1 batsman, with the score on 94 after only 12 overs.  The final score of 228 for 8 represented something of a comeback for Hambledon and 4 points were in the bag!  Steve Ripiner taking 3 wickets on debut, with Paul Jackson (2 wickets) and Brian Vickers (1 wicket) also bowling steadily.
After some inspirational words of wisdom from the skipper, the Hambledon openers smashed 88 of the first 10 overs, before Matt Radford was bowled for 46.  Jon Bridgman went soon after for 39 and Jack Dyer for a stylish 25.  Double figures from Tim Rogers (15), Wayne Norman (18) and Steve Ripiner (19) kept Hambledon in contention.  We were eventually bowled out for 194, losing by 34 runs but gaining 10 points in the process!  An excellent performance full of positives for the season ahead!

Hambledon vs Sparsholt

The Hambledon rep side were on the road again today travelling far and wide, many not to the intended destination on time but plenty of sights to behold on the way.

A slight delayed start but having won the toss Sparsholt fancied a bat on what looked like a nice deck.

Captain Hewitt opened the bowling from the pavilion end and Will "what a man" Mann from the other.

A tough start for the dons as batsman looked to be getting in the groove and playing some nice shots, mixed with a few suspect ones.

At last a break through from the Bean; trapping one of the openers LBW. Will then followed suit with a nut to dismiss the number 3 bat that cut in and hit the top of off stump.

The Dons were starting to roll; a bowling change by the skipper led to the newly crowned king of the swing Chapman replacing the skipper from the pavilion end.

No one could foresee the torment about to be unleashed; the ball moving from the start of his spell Chapman opened up with a double wicket maiden.

Another change from the other end saw Will replaced by Atko keen to get in on the action.

Atko picks up a wicket with a snick behind to Nick Scutt.

It was then time for the Chapman show to really get going. Ball after ball causing the batsman trouble, wickets tumbling like a Jenga tower. Nick Scutt taking another two catches with the gloves totalling 3 for the day; a sterling job. Chapman eventually running out of batsman to send back finished with figures of 7 wickets for 4 runs from 5.3 overs. Now 11wkts-7runs from two games.

Tea ladies caught off guard led to a quick turnaround and both sides back to the arena to do battle.

The Dons requiring 60 for victory, a simple task it was not to be!

The dons found themselves 20-5 at one stage as JCW, Chairman Mark, Jimbo Scutt, Nick Scutt and James Atkinson all fell cheaply! The pressure was growing in the small run chase; up stepped Paul "the posh" Vickers and Captain Beano, cool heads saw them steer clear of the iceberg and cruise on full speed ahead, no further wickets falling with Bean registering 20 odd not out and the Posh 9 not out.

Game over by 4pm the dons had tea and reflecting on a crazy game of cricket; soaked up the win.

Dan Hewitt believes overseas player Roscoe Thattil holds the key to Hambledon’s success this term.

The Sri Lankan batsman joined the Ridge Meadow outfit for the season and will be in their side for the short trip to Burridge in Southern Electric Premier League division one tomorrow.

The 20-year-old plays first-class cricket for Sri Lanka Air Force Sports Club just outside Colombo in his homeland and has one century and six half-centuries to his name in 16 matches.

With the ball, his off-breaks have also picked up 16 first-class wickets.

But the Hambledon skipper knows Thattil faces a tough baptism in adapting to English conditions on his first visit to these shores, although his maiden half-century of the season last week would suggest he is learning quickly.

Hewitt said: ‘Roscoe looks a brilliant player.

‘He got 60 not out last week in the win over Hartley Wintney and looks like one of the best players I have seen in the league.

‘Initially, he has struggled a bit with the conditions when it is swinging and seaming because he is used to batting at number five in Sri Lanka.

‘By the eighth over in Sri Lanka, the spinners are on at both ends so it’s totally different to what he is used to.

‘But he looks plenty good enough to adapt.

‘And it would make a huge difference to us if he has a big season.’

The Dons are without several first-teamers this week with James Scutt, James Atkinson, Jack Lavous, Cameron Prentice and Ian Turner all ruled out.

New recruits from United Services Reggie and James Marshall are not yet available.

But Paul Vickers, Will Bond, Kyle Shinn come in and a debut is handed to Spencer Le-Clercq, a talented spinning all-rounder.

Hewitt (pictured when 16) said: ‘We’re missing a few but it’s a good chance for the young lads.

‘When I started playing first-team cricket, I was batting at number 10 and not doing anything.

‘But I am going to get these kids a game, get them involved and learning what first-team cricket is all about. We’ve got to trust them and see what they can do.

‘Ultimately, it’s a good chance to throw these guys in at the deep end and see if they can swim.

‘The regular first-team players have also got to step up and give the youngsters something to emulate.’

Burridge name an unchanged side and Hewitt expects a test.

He said: ‘Burridge look a good side but it’s a tough league.

‘Two sides have got to go down and I’m pretty confident we won’t be one of them but we have got to pull our finger out to make sure it doesn’t happen.’

BURRIDGE: Rick Ankers, Richard Kenway, Shu Chowdhury, Derek Kenway, Scott Mills, Geoff Dods, Paul Ancell, Greg Thew, Jamie Rood, Suji Wickramasinghe, Nick McMurray.

HAMBLEDON: Dan Hewitt, Joe Collings-Wells, Paul Vickers, Rob Atkins, Roscoe Thattil, Will Bond, Nick Scutt, Spencer Le-Clercq, Will Mann, Kyle Shinn, Rupert Hetherington

13 May 2013 : "Dons" victorious..
1st XI Away Vs Hartley Wintney Sat 11th May
In search of there first win of the season the Ridge raiders travelled to Hartley with some car shuffling, dubious undertaking and hard shoulder riding the dons got to Hartley with licences intact.
The picturesque HW had a picture perfect wicket hard with a tint of green, overcast skies and the promise of rain clown won the toss and had a bowl.
With two rain delays upon the umpires call for play, third time lucky and the skipper took the first over which invariably lengthened with wides and no-balls but managed to scalp HWs opener in the first over. Hoopy Roopy from the field end showed much more discipline for his 1 for 26 from 10 straight, mean while the skipper picked up their overseas with a surprising straight one Atko came on and picked up a wicket early on in the fielding restrictions. Will 'Wham' Mann followed roops and picked up a quick 2fa. Roscoe followed Atko and bowled some wonderful variations soon enough HW had slumped to 162 ao.
Out came the blues to bat and looked in a nervous state at 22 for 2 but a solid and free flowing Jimbo got to 59 and passed the 4000 career spl runs landmark. His demise brought together Roscoe Thattil and Jaques Clownis requiring 82 off 28 overs and despite a wobbly first 6 deliveries from the skipper missing shots and middling leaves roscoe took the reigns and blitzed his way to 60* and the dons to a comprehensive 7 wicket win. Well done blues!

13 May 2013 : 2nds win season opener..
2nds win season opener..Hambledon 2ndXI vs Portsmouth 2ndXI

The men of Hambledon awoke to bright sunshine and fuzzy heads looking forward to the 1st league game of the 2013 season. The weather forecast not so good.

Both teams arrived with high expectations; Hambledon fielding one of the strongest sides in recent years, as did Portsmouth who seemed to have dropped their entire first team; Hafeez, Tahir and Bailey who took 4 wickets in the 1stXI last week !

Rain, some more rain and alot of waiting followed. Having tossed up knowing a late start time would follow; showing some inexperience the Hambledon skipper took a gamble and backed his batsmen to put runs on the board (a decision questioned by many supported by few)

The game was reduced to 33 overs per side, 8 overs per bowler and a start time of 15.15.

Player/Chairman, all round veteran Mark Le Clercq and the muddy hobbit Owain picked up from where they left off last year, taking to the crease to face a shiny new cherry.

Hafeez opened from the bottom end wind assisted and left arm over Bailey from the top.

A battle between both batsmen and bowlers followed, the first few overs very tough with the new ball swinging and seaming off of a green pitch. But some loose deliveries and classy strokes saw Hambledon put a good start together. From 10 overs the Dons were 48-0  a platform worthy of Tom Daley to dive from.

A change of bowling and the dons were still building momentum, rain then stopped play with the Dons 96-0 from 17 overs.

A treat for all as an early tea was taken, both sides comforted by cake and tea.

Play resumed and Mark Le Clercq completed his landmark and got 50, this having not held a bat since the indoor league and not batting pre-season!

Chairman troubled the scorers no more after being bowled by the 2nd ball of Tahir's spell.

Jamie Lewis then took to the crease, tension began to mount but Owain and Jamie started to knock the ball around and put pressure on the field. A partnership looked likely but Owain was then bowled by Tahir trying to cut one from middle stump, disappointed but not a bad score of 35 to start the year. Jamie succumbed to an LBW from Marston for 11.

Bondy and Vickers at the crease. The Posh unlucky after a mad deviation of the ball seeing him dismissed for 4.

A minor collapse saw the Dons 98-0 from 18 overs to be 124-4.

Veteran Magrath aka MC Macca joins Will '007' Bond. Patient batting, glorious stroke play and some good running rescued the situation.

Magrath 21* and Bondy 30* finishing the innings, Bondy smashing the last ball of the innings straight into the sightscreens!

Hambledon ending up 181-4 from their allotted 33.

Portsmouth needing 171 from 30 overs to win after the rain reduction.

Newly crowned King of the swing Chapman took the new ball and kicked of the 2nd innings.

A top start saw 1 run, early movement and some worried batsmen from the opening over!

Kyle 'Friday Night' Shinn followed in his usual fashion up the hill, only one loose delivery and 5 dots from his 1st.

KOTS then struck with a pearly inswinger hitting all 3 stumps. More tight bowling and wickets from Chapman and Shinn to come.

After both had been bowled for the max overs Portsmouth were struggling at 34-3 from 15.

Shinn with figures of 1-15 from 7; including a maiden followed by a wicket maiden! Chapman 2-15 from 8.

Future chairman Spencer and Georgeous George's time to shine. Leg spinner Spence picking up 2 wickets for 22 from 5 overs. George unlucky not to pick up a few wickets after the ball was chipped in the air but away from any fielders and a difficult chance dropped at long off; 0-29 from 4.

Phil Silvester had been busy in the field and now came on to bowl.

A scene from independence day now overhead, a monstrous cloud threatened to ruin the game just a couple of overs short of the required 25.

But quick turnarounds in some heavy rain saw the Dons home!

Phil 'Farmer Strength' Silvester a slight cameo but putting himself in the wickets; finishing 2-13 from 2.

Match over the Dons win by 55 runs.

An important start to the campaign, some impressive bowling, good energy in the field and chances taken, also good batting to put big runs on the board led to a relatively comfortable win against one of the stronger sides in the league!

12 May 2013 : Under 13s start season with win
8 wicket win for young Dons
The Under 13 A's started the new season with a comprehensive win over Havant at Ridge Meadow. Winning the toss the young Dons put the visitors in on a damp wicket. The Havant youngsters made good progress, but lost wickets steadily through the innings. Tom Toogood being the pick of the bowlers with 1 for 4 in 4 overs. Tom also contributed to 2 run outs and a catch, as the visitors finished on 89 for 9.
The young Dons made light work of the total, reaching the target in 12 overs. Jack Thistlethwayte and Seb Byers staring with the bat, both scoring 30 retired. Henry Glanfield finishing off the run chase scoring a rapid 13.

06 May 2013 : "Dons" go run-crazy in the sunshine..

The "Dons" went run-crazy on Sunday in the 1st round of the National Village K.O at Godshill in the New Forest..

The Ridge was a hive of  junior activity but there was little sign of  the senior dons side.

Slowly but surely the  aroma  of bbq dave’s full English breakfast wafted across the  surrounding hills drawing in the players.

Stomachs  filled and cars bulging  with kit the journey started, captain Dan leading his convoy of players into the depths of the New Forest.

A lack of sat nav caused minor panic, but Atko soon ended that by producing his 2008 birthday atlas………..minor problem that Godshill wasn’t marked……..!

Eventually the ground was found-picturesque to say the very least.

A square any groundsman would be proud of nestled in the centre of a lightening fast minefield of an outfield.

A fielding warm up was best forgotten- thankfully unseen by the home team who had yet to arrive.

The toss was won and Hewitt decided that batting was  a fine idea.

Few would have dared to dream about what followed…….

A partnership of 180 was put on by the opening pair of Joe Collings-Wells and James Scutt –Joe first out for  102.

Scutt  was joined by his captain who was already in excellent form from the previous days league game.

A partnership of 93 for the next wicket rattled the score to 273 with dan Hewitt registering 43 and Jimbo a powerful 120.

A couple of quick wickets  brought Atkinson and Cam Prentice together and a power hitting contest proceeded –Prentice a product of gym work and bread consumption delivering raw power and Atkinson timing and  effortless clean striking.

Balls rained down into the gorse, scattering picnics

Shortly batsmen 7 and 8 were at the crease for a final flourish.

Vickers, aware that a chance of a bowl was seriously in doubt, even with the score approaching 350 , decided he best earn the tea and cakes that he so desperately craves of a weekend, despatching the final over for 28.

A final tally of 376 for 6  put the dons in a healthy position.

An excellent tea was had by players and spectators alike—the Victoria sponge of particular note!

Dons took to the field, aware that the job was half done and that nothing but a continuation of the excellent standards would be accepted by the skipper.

Rupert opened up, bowling a spell of 7 overs 2 for 12 that suitably impressed his young lady on the sidelines.

Rory Prentice, gracing us with his presence after a long winter over which he has become the premium fast bowler in his family charged in from the other end and bowled a lively spell claiming 4 for 17.

Will Mann and Rhidian called upon to put the game to bed.

Enter the king of the swingers……….Rhidian , formerly known as the static traveller produced a spell of swing bowling few would have laid a bat on- 4 wickets for 3 runs.

Nick Scutt coped admirably behind the stumps considering the ridiculous movement chapman was achieving!

A huge thankyou to all those who travelled down to support, and lastly a thankyou to Godshill for an enjoyable game played in the best of spirits.

03 May 2013 : Hewitt calls on Hambledon to kick on
Dan Hewitt targeted a 'significant improvement' as he prepared his side for the new Southern Electric Premier League division one season.

The Hambledon skipper took over the Ridge Meadow reins from James Scutt last season.

The 2012 campaign began well but petered out somewhat, as the Dons had to rely on other results to avoid relegation on the final day.

Hewitt is determined to avoid a repeat of that nailbiting finale this summer - and he is confident his new-look squad is capable of delivering a top-four finish, as they did in 2011.

Former Hampshire spinner Ian Turner is involved once again, while left-handed batsman Jack Lavous has returned from United Services and the Dons have successfully recruited an overseas player.

Hewitt, who has topped the division one bowling charts for the past two seasons, said: 'After a relatively disappointing 2012 campaign the 2013 season is looking better.

'Ian Turner and Jack Lavous have returned to the club, while Roscoe Thattil has arrived as our overseas player, on the back of averaging more than 60 in the Sri Lankan Premier League.

'And if you factor in the experience young players gain year on year, we are setting our targets for a significant improvement.'

Hambledon won their pre-season friendlies against University of Portsmouth and Portsmouth & Southsea, while the clash with Hursley Park was rained off.

Joe Collings-Wells, who made a big impact with the bat in his debut season at Ridge Meadow, missed both fixtures but has since returned from a winter Down Under.

Hambledon kick off their campaign with a home clash against newly-promoted Fawley tomorrow (1pm).

Hewitt said: 'Joe Collings-Wells returns from Australia for the game.

'He’s had a gap year playing out there, so I am confident he will be coming back a much better player with higher ambitions.

'Fawley will be a decent side, though. They knocked us out of the t20 Cup last year and I was impressed with the quality of their side.

'I understand they’ve got a handy overseas, too, so it should be set-up for a good game.'

While Hewitt expects a tough test from Fawley, he is also predicting a competitive season all round.

He has tipped reigning-champions Sarisbury for the title but reckons the rest of the clubs will be scrapping with each other right to the end.

The skipper is therefore keen to see his Dons secure their safety before pushing on with headier ambitions.

'The first division looks pretty strong from what I understand,' said Hewitt.

'Everyone has picked up a couple of players and a decent overseas.

'We’re still aiming for the top four but, ultimately, the first check-point is safety - as with every season.

'So let’s get that out the way first.

'I fancy Sarisbury to top the table again this season. They are a strong, rounded side with a great mix of talent and experience.'

Hewitt is without James Atkinson this weekend, while the likes of Joseph Brown, Cameron Prentice and Rory Prentice will be unavailable for the beginning of the campaign, too.

Hambledon: Dan Hewitt, James Scutt, Roscoe Thattil, Rob Atkins, Joe Collings-Wells, Jack Lavous, Paul Vickers, Nick Scutt, Will Mann, Ian Turner, Rupert Hetherington

30 Apr 2013 : Dons complete unbeaten pre-season
Dons complete unbeaten pre-seasonHambledon have remained unbeaten throughout their pre-season programme.

Following last weekend's victories over Portsmouth & Southsea and Petersfield, the Dons will go into this Saturday's first league fixture on a high.

The 100-per-cent record in April gives the Ridge Meadow a big boost as they prepare to host Fawley on Saturday in Southern Electric Premier League division one.

They will then travel to New Forest outfit Godshill on Sunday for the first round of the National Village Knockout.
Both matches begin at 1pm.

20 Apr 2013 : Thattil helps Dons teach students a lesson
Hambledon kicked off their 2013 pre-season campaign with a 53-run triumph over University of Portsmouth at Ridge Meadow.

Paul Vickers (32) and Nick Scutt (27) top scored with the bat as the Dons were bowled out for 155.

Sri Lankan all-rounder Roscoe Thattil then announced his arrival as overseas player with four for 31 as the students could only muster 102 in reply.
