Dons go top of the league

Posted on

Hambledon signalled their NatWest Under-16 Indoor League intentions with a win double over Dorset pair Bournemouth and Parley Sports at the Rose Bowl.

Eddie Lewis, Rory Prentice and JJ Brown led a run-spree against Bournemouth as the young Dons posted 165 for four.

The Ridge Meadow outfit found it difficult to take wickets with the ball, though, as openers Dan Message and Harry Weal got established.

But despite their lack of cutting edge in the field they still cruised to a comfortable 44-run win.

Joseph Brown then hit an unbeaten 42 against Parley Sports, for whom George Wilson struck an unbeaten half-century in reply.

A middle-order batting slip cost Parley the chance of beating arch rivals Bournemouth, who successfully defended 112 for five. Parley appeared to be cruising it after seven overs, but eventually fell six runs short.

Teenage managers Saul Harris and Alex Nippard hope for a 'vote of confidence' from their peers.

Hambledon 165-4 (13) (Lewis 34*, Prentice 31*, Brown 27, le Clercq 20, Palmer 2-36) Bournemouth 121-1 (3)(Message 26*, Weal 25*). Hambledon won by 44 runs.
Hambledon 147-3 (14) (Brown 42*, le Clercq 32*, Prentice 25*) Parley Sports 131-5 (3) (Wilson 56*, Thistlewaite 2-19, le Clercq 2-21). Hambledon won by 16 runs.
Bournemouth 112-5 (13) (Weal 31*, Matthews 19) Parley Sports 106-5 (3) (Wilson 28, Hendy 20). Bournemouth won by six runs.

Superb bowling performance secures win for U13s

After a disappointing defeat against Fareham in their opening match, the Under 13s bounced back with an excellent win against Waterlooville at Fareham Leisure Centre on Sunday afternoon.

Batting first Hambledon made a modest 102 for 3, with Finlay Rockett making a rapid 21, including a massive 6 and Tom Toogood with 14.

What followed was the best bowling performance seen by a young under 13 team for some time. Bowling only 2 wides the boys bowled out Waterlooville in 11 overs.

Finlay and Will Hardman opened up and restricted the opening batsman well below the run rate. Harry Hoolihan then took the important wicket of Archie Reynolds with the help of a smart catch by Tom at square leg. This was followed by Seb Byers getting a thin edge taken by keeper Sam Phillips. Tom then took a further wicket with a successful run out.

The pressure of the tight bowling really took its toll in the 11th over, when Tom took 2 wickets, one bowled and a catch by Finlay off the wall and then a run out by Seb saw the U13s through to victory.

Hambledons "B" team started their Indoor season with a thrilling 2 run over Portsmouth Comm CC.

After winning the toss and batting first a very youthful Dons team made up of 5 teenagers plus Captain Mark Le-Clercq ammassed 115-5 off their 12 overs with the captain scoring 42 with good contributions from Eddie Lewis and Spencer Le-Clercq.

In reply the opposition were well placed at 70-2 off 6 overs due in large to some wayward Dons bowling..The bowlers helped by some excellent fielding especially from Dom Humphrey then recovered their line and length to peg back the opposition, further wickets from the captain and young Rory Prentice left them needing 12 off the final 2 overs with two wickets remaining..a wicket for the captain left the final pair at the crease needing 4 to win off the final over to be bowled by 16 year old Kyle Shinn who held his nerve to claim the final wicket caught on the back wall with two balls remaining and a thrilling 2 run victory for the jubilant Dons!
